PP Honeycomb vs. Plywood: The Water Test
The single most compelling argument for PP honeycomb over plywood is water resistance. Polypropylene absorbs less than 0.1% moisture. Plywood absorbs 20–80% of its dry weight when exposed to water, causing irreversible swelling, delamination, rot, and mold.
In RV and truck body applications, moisture intrusion is inevitable over time — through aging sealant joints, around fastener holes, at door gaskets. With plywood, this means structural repair or replacement every 3–7 years in humid climates. With PP honeycomb, moisture intrusion is a cosmetic issue (wipe it dry) rather than a structural emergency. This difference alone justifies the higher material cost for any application with a service life beyond 5 years.
PP Honeycomb vs. Steel: The Weight Equation
Steel panels are strong and durable, but heavy. A 1.5mm steel panel weighs approximately 12 kg/m² — three to four times heavier than a PP honeycomb panel of equivalent stiffness. For a truck body with 30 m² of panel area, switching from steel to PP honeycomb saves approximately 240–360 kg of body weight.
Steel also requires anti-corrosion treatment (galvanizing, powder coating, or painting) and ongoing maintenance to prevent rust. PP honeycomb is inherently corrosion-proof, chemical-resistant, and maintenance-free. For enclosed and semi-enclosed vehicle body applications, PP honeycomb delivers superior lifecycle economics despite higher initial material cost.
PP Honeycomb vs. Aluminum: Cost-Performance Trade-off
Aluminum panels offer excellent strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, but at significant cost. Raw aluminum is 3–4× more expensive per kilogram than polypropylene, and aluminum panel fabrication (cutting, bending, welding) requires specialized equipment. PP honeycomb panels are fabricated through thermal pressing (simpler, faster, lower tooling cost) and can be cut with standard woodworking tools.
For applications where aluminum's higher temperature resistance (200°C+ vs 80°C for PP) and absolute strength are not required, PP honeycomb provides equivalent panel performance at 30–50% lower cost.
PP Honeycomb vs. PU Foam: Insulation Applications
PU (polyurethane) foam excels at thermal insulation (0.022–0.028 W/(m·K)) and is the standard choice for refrigerated trucks, cold storage, and building insulation.
